What does it mean when the referee calls the ball and holds up two fingers to the side that loses the point? It has something to do with setting, I think.

  1. What it means is that a player committed a double contact fault.  this doesn't necessarily mean it was a setting fault.  More times then not it is, but it could be a person hit the ball two times.

the rules state, other then the first contact it is illegal to have multiple contacts.  You must contact the ball as a single contact (setting, hitting, passing).  so when the official holds up 2 fingers a player did not hit the ball in one contact - 2 hits while setting, two hits while trying to pass, just decided to hit the ball 2 times.

  2. duble hit from the sitter

  3. this means that the setter touched the ball 2 times. which means it was a double hit

  4. The ref is calling two hits.  In indoor volleyball, one player cannot make two consecutive touches in a row.

The setter is sometimes called for two hits as well.  If the ref judges that the player did not simultaneously make contact with the both hands, then that is considered hitting the ball twice.

  5. When it involves the setter it's two hits usually with one hand lower than the other.  When the pregame warm ups are going on look at the referees.  Chances are they are playing close attention to the setters.  Number one to find out who they are so they can track them in the rotation and number two to watch them and identify how good they are and watch for tendencies.  Many times if the setter is good during warm ups they won't look at them as hard during the game.

  6. The ref is calling a double touch.

  7. The referee is calling the team for having a player that contacted the ball twice illegally.

If it is not the team's first contact, it may not be hit twice in a row by one player.

The referees are told to look for two things.  Over control of the ball or under control of the ball.  Over control of the ball means the player has the ball in their control too long.  It is prolonged contact or commonly called the lift or carry or throw.  The under control is when the player does not play the ball correctly because they do not have enough control of the ball.  That is the situation that you described.  The under control of the ball by the player is called a double contact or double hit.

  8. It means double-hit. A player who hit twice consecutively, not counting the block, would be called, and as the result his/her team lost a point.

There is one exception to the above description... if a ball got hit simultaneously by two players, and the hit is not the third on your side, it would be counted as one hit and either one of those two players can go for the next hit.

A double would also be called if the setter made two distinctive "noise" when contacting the ball.

  9. double-touch

the same player cannot touch the ball twice in a row,

sometimes the setter messes up and accidentally sets it with one hand then the other, it would be a double-touch
