What does it mean when there is grey on an orange, under it's peel?

It doesn't look like mold at all. Its under the peel, in between the rind and the meat of the fruit. Also it's on like every orange from a whole bag I got from a local grower.

  1. Hmm. Not to be a broken record, but it is more likely then not mold. If it's on more then one orange and you did purchase them from someone on the side of the road (like previously mentioned) It is very likely that The oranges are no longer in prime condition.

I have experienced a problem similar with more then one orange from the same bag. The skin almost seemed loose on several of the oranges, causing me to believe such a symptom was at least partially responsible for 'intrusion'.

Also, as mentioned, chances are consuming such a 'greyness' would not likely kill you, however eating mold isn't really something I try to do. :P

  2. happened to me, i threw it away. DAM costco

  3. Sounds to me like all of those oranges are either bad or there could have been some kind of disease in the crops which caused all of the oranges to have that mark.

I wouldnt eat them though if I were you, and I would go back to that local grower and ask him/her to look at all the oranges and ask them if maybe something was wrong with their crops.

  4. If it is in fact gray, then yes, it is mold.

If it is white, then it is the pith, a membrane that connects the rind to the segments ( the "meat" as you call it )

To find out if it is mold, rub a dry finger over the pith, if there is residue on your finger, then it is mold, discard them or take them back if possible.

I am suspecting it is mold, with the heat we have been having it is quite common this time of the year when the harvest has been over with for nearly 6 months.  If you purchased them from a roadside stand or grower, where they stored inside in a cooler ?

  5. ew sorry but i think it is mold i wouldnt eat it..

  6. Mold.It probably won't kill you but why take a chance?
