What does it mean when they say 'box'? is this a server?

for instance, "we are going to load this data on this box". or another example, "if you are using a linux box..."

is this another name for server?

Box is generally referred to a Computer which you are currently working on. It can sometimes be used in different shades .

Linux box would be a computer running on linux.

just a computer world silly lingo.

Like a DOS Box is an old computer without enough memory, or disk space, or other capabilities to run any other operating system other than DOS. or  Maggotbox  which is a derogatory term for a Macintosh computer.
