When I was about 12 (I'm 16 now) for an entire summer I dreamt that I was drowning. Every night I would wake up out of breath and drenched in sweat. I think I stoped breathing in my sleep. Every dream I was in a different body of water. I have always wondered if this ment anything at all and if so what it ment.

Now almost every night I dream that I am floating or flying. They can be scary or peaceful. But I'm just always floating. It's really weard.

Does anyone have any answers for me?

  4. Your 12 year-old drowning dreams were physical crisis dreams caused by restricted breathing. Did you happen to sleep with your covers over your head?

Floating and flying (and falling) can also be caused physical sensation, but not always. The sensation comes during REM paralysis when we are near or in conscious wakefulness, but are disconnected from our body to a great degree because of chemicals released which prevent signals from our brains from reaching our major muscles, and dulls our senses. In this state, we are in something of a sensory deprivation tank, and are not oriented to the position of our body.

Because of this disconnection from the senses, we can feel free-floating, falling or flying. When we reconnect to our senses, we can feel like fall into our body, and wake with a snap.
