I need to translater an article for my school work, but I can't understand this sentence (from economic article)

==> European boards have generally done more than American boards to link pay to performance.

What is "link pay to performance"? Please help me.

for context

A recent survey by Booz & Company, a consultancy, found that European bosses were more likely to have left than American ones—and that they tended to last less time in the job. European boards have generally done more than American boards to link pay to performance. And pay, though lower, has broadly tracked the increases in America over the past few decades even as monitoring by shareholders has improved. That is not what you would expect if poor governance were behind the bonanza.

  1. Link pay is directly related with your performance in the organisation for enhancement of your wages after working for certain period. The evolution committee accessed the performance of the official and after grading his performance they grant the increment in the wages.

  2. It means that in Europe, when the company does well, the bosses get paid well, unlike in America. There've been a lot of stories in the US where a company's stock is way down, thousands of workers get laid off, but the CEO still gets an $8 million bonus.
