Or from teacher to guidance counselor? I'm only 16, but I'm quite interested in pursuing a career as a teacher. I'm not sure I want to be one for the rest of my life, though? I want to move, but still in an educational career. What does it take for them to move up, at least to something like a Chairholder.

  1. In my city, to become a principal you have to go back to school and get a certificate in "Administration and Supervision."  Same for a chairholder, who is usually an assistant principal.

  2. its called a "promotion"

  3. An additional degree in administration and usually 5 to 8 years of teaching experience. Principal applicants go through rounds of interviews by Board members and staff before one is selected and hired. You need management skills and the ability to discipline.

  4. To become an administrator in Florida, you must get an additional degree in administration. You must also work as an Assistant Principal first. Other states and different districts may have additional requirements.

To become a Guidance Counselor, you must get a Master's in Guidance and Counseling. Most states require the same courses for that. It is possible in some states to become a counselor without ever actually being a teacher first.
