I'm thinking of trying out for soccer later this year in my school. I've played since I was around 2, but I stopped when I was 10-11. Now I'm 14 and I've been practicing with a few friends, and I think I will fit in to be a good defender.

  1. defender in my opinion is the most important role in soccer besides goalkeeper. to be a defender you must be able to play ahead of the players, be able to steal the ball or at least get the ball away from the attackers. you must know when to pass and who to pass to. cause if a defender messes up on a pass the chances that it is very close to the goal is high.and lastly have fun. your not gonna be good in a position if you dont enjoy it.

  2. i have played soccer for 8 years since i was 5 and i started out a defender because i am not afraid of the ball or the ground you need to have strong legs and not be intimidated by the bigger players and make sure u can have good passes to the forwards who r usually the smaller faster more agile players who have bee playing for a whie i hope it helps!!!!!!

  3. No, I think he is incorrect just don't stick your foot in and just try to steal the ball, keep the attacker in front of you, so your teammates can get back and help you.(speed doesn't hurt at all)

  4. touraj j pretty much covered it

  5. When I played defense this is the one thing I told the forward I was going to defend. I got this from one of my coaches.

"Look its either you or the ball, but both of you together will not go by me"

And give him one good hard tackle at the beginning of the game to let him know your not messing around.

  6. A defender is the farthest back besides the goalie and can therefore see a larger part of the field than most players. Defenders have to direct the team when defending and also conservatively support the attack. When defending, defenders have to keep a cool head and interpret both the opposition and their own teammates. A big part of defending is using your brains to stop the other team and control the pace of the game. When the time comes, a defender must match the opposition physically and have the courage and resolve to go for that head ball or make that tackle that can prevent a goal.

  7. strengh mainly, height.

  8. Strength and pace to keep up with strikers.

You need to be able to time tackles well, you don't want to be constantly fouling and giving away free kicks.

    Good luck (:
