  1. First of all, you do not need a teaching credential to sub.  In order to get a Teaching Credential, you have to have a BA plus have gone through a Credential program, taken and passed several tests and done student teaching.

Not sure what the requirements are now for subs in CA. but when i started subbing it was 72 units, pass the CBEST, and a DOJ (department of justice) clearance (fingerprinting ).  I do know at that time districts were hard up for subs (still are as far as i know) and many had their own requirements (# of units, etc..) but i do know that CBEST was a definite requirement (that can be taken by anyone at anytime after HS) and is good forever.  Without a credential you will be limited as to how long you can sub in a classroom (30 days straight then take a break and go back) long-term.  I did several long term sub assignments but had a credential for that level (elementary Multiple Subject) so i was not limited to the number of days i could be in there.

Check the State Dept. of Education website for requirements for subbing now.
