  1. I don't know about orthopedic surgery specifically, but I know about getting into med school.  First, your GPA is super important, especially in the math and science department.  That's something you need to start focusing on and keeping up with as soon as possible.  I know lots of my classmates are re-taking some of their science classes because they passed with a C and they're trying to get their GPA up for med school.  Community service is always a plus, med school admissions boards like to see that you're well rounded. (Being involved in school activities is great, too)  Having a job or volunteer position in a hospital will start giving you medical experience now, which also helps when you're applying to med school.

Although you can get into med school with a Bachelors degree in just about anything, having a bachelors in a science like biology or chemistry is recommended.  You'll need to take the MCAT at some point...usually people take it their junior or senior year.  It's required for med school admission and covers biology, chemistry, physics, and verbal reasoning.  After you're done with all of that, you apply and hopefully, get in!

    So, in a nutshell:

Good grades (especially math and science)

    school activities

    community service

medical experience via volunteering or work

    bachelors degree

    MCAT

Also, get on your instructors' good sides...you'll be needing recommnedation letters at various stages in your academic career and it's never too late to start.

Last...be prepared to give up most of your free time. There is a reason not everyone becomes a doctor...it's a lot of hard work and it's not easy...

    Good luck!
