What does it take to be an otaku girl?

An intense appreciation for the Japanese visual culture. This includes anime, manga, and or video games and all fan related activities that goes along with them. This may or may not constitute an intense love of yaoi, shonen-ai, or "boy love". Some do and others find it is not for them.

Convention attendance is not necessary but it certainly helps. Cosplay can only further help. Remember, true otaku purchase there series as opposed to illegal downloading. You still may download and watch online to your hearts content but still buy your favorites to support your favorite series and have bragging rights.

If you need any further tips the series Genshiken has a fairly accurate representation of Japanese otaku and female otaku. Mind you,   American otaku do not need to take it as far to be classified as such.

No need to be as intense as they are. You will only exhaust your energy and your money.

The term otaku doesn't carry the negative connotations it once did as strongly, especially in the states were it was never really considered as negative.

To summarize just love some aspect of Japanese culture be it animated, drawn, or created in some way. Good question by the way. I can finally put this knowledge to use.

dunno.... maybe if you cosplay a lot. you see i once read the otaku mangazine and it did say that addicted to anime and cosplay might help to being an otaku.

Depends on what kind of otaku she is. She could be into anything. Otaku means "obsessed-wannabe-"etc...

For example, if she were an otaku for anime, she'd probably:

1. Is an obsessed fan of anime

2. Reads manga

3. Has any kind of a Japanese snack, like pocky, ramen, etc

4. Wears some kind of bag

5. Wears outragious clothes

6. Knows her facts beyond that of any other human being

7. Draws with a sketchbook

8. Loves Japanese culture

9. Loves anime music

10. Has anime purchandise, like posters, keychains, etc...

11. Cosplays and goes to conventions

12. Extremely shy

13. Total fangirl of a certain character

14. Her room looks like a typical manga store

15. Her library has turned into a manga book store itself

16. She has more anime movies and episodes than the average store does
