  1. A lot of mental and physical toughness.  You have multiple routes to SF in the army.  Talk with a recruiter about the differences in each path.  SF (green berets) work the human relations side as well as the kill you quickly and efficiently side.  Rangers attack in force, securing airfields, kicking in doors and bashing skulls, securing key targets quickly, qrf....  160th soar is the air component of Army SF.  They fly in the SF guys (Army SF, Navy Seals, Delta) and rangers on blackhawks, chinooks, and little birds.  All are completely different but all require good scores on your asvab and apft.  Talk to a recruiter and get started on your pt.

  2. Bet thing is to sign up off what you want, not what the Army needs. Dont believe the "you can transfer" line. You want to be a ranger then sign for in on your contract.  If you want a green beret then enlist in the 18X "Xray" track. You are slotted for Special Forces off the bat.

  3. Well, you can either go Rangers or Special Forces. Just do good on your ASVAB and get physically fit and rock your PT tests and they'll send you to Airborne School and then you can choose to go to Ranger School and/or Special Forces.

  4. Depends. There are many different Special Operations units in the Army.

    Special Forces (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 10th SFGs)

    75th Ranger Regiment

160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR)

    Psychological Operations

    Civil Affairs

  5. You are in luck if you want to be in the Special Forces in the Army, because right now, the Army is trying to increase this area by a whole battalion.  You can enlist in the army with an 18 Xray contract. The bonus' are very good right now. You  need to research this area of the Army, though, and make sure you are up for this. This is an extremely rigorous course that takes approximately 2 years to complete. If you join under 18Xray and then do not make it through selection, then you will be sent straight to regular army. Most likely the 82nd. Hope this helps.

  6. You can go SF anytime you want. I recommend enlisting first, getting into shape, and LEARN LEARN LEARN. When you feel you're ready to try for SF, drop a packet and you'll be good to go. Same with Ranger School. Units WANT Ranger qualified guys in their units, and your unit can't really say no to you go through the SF course because it goes out of their hands.

But for the Army, you really have two options .. either the 75th Ranger Regiment or Special Forces. You can join as an 11X Option 40 for the Ranger Regiment, or an 18X for SF .. but the washout rate is high for both, especially the 18X. All of these guys are young as h**l and think they're tough as anything ... and soon get a reality check. I'll just say have fun with the 30 mile ruck march.
