  1. An average is about $6500-8500 for private pilot training. That will include a minimum of 40 hours with an instructor, usually it takes closer to 60 hours. You must complete a ground school either in person or on DVD's you can order from places like Sportys or King Schools. You must also have a flight physical from a designated medical examiner, pass a written knowledge exam, and finally your check ride.

It takes most people about 6 months or more on average to complete training. It all depends on how much time (and money) you can devote to the process, your instructor's availability, weather, availability of aircraft, etc.

Have a look at these websites:

  2. First, go to your local airport and talk to the Fixed Base Operator (FBO).  Prices vary from area to area, but you can expect to spend $1500-$2000 for flying lessons.  Then there is also Ground School, which costs extra.  When your instructor feels you are ready to obtain your license,  an additional fee is assessed by the Flight Examiner. In round figures, $3000-$3500 is what you should expect to pay.

  3. It will cost a few grand to say the least

  4. It will probably cost you about 6 to 8,000 for all the training, tests, and supplies, and can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months depending on how often you can fly.  You can save some time and money by making sure you are prepared for every flight or ground lesson.

Go out to your local airport and see if there is a place there that instructs.  Most places will give you an introductory flight for about 50 bucks, and will take some time to explain the entire process.  Once you start hanging around the airport a little, you'll notice how many people there are that really enjoy talking aviation, and would love to answer questions you may have.  Take time to find an instructor that you work well with, because you will be spending a lot of time in some pretty close quarters with them.
