  1. You have to be at least 16 to obtain the student pilots license (required for any solo flight, but not for dual flight w/ an instructor), but for the full private pilot license, you have to be 17. That means you're at the right age!

Cost depends on the type of plane, where you live, how oftern you fly, etc. Ballpark figure is $5,000-$7,000, probably in a Cessna 152/172 or Piper Cherokee. Rental rate could be anywhere from $60/hr to over $100/hr depending on the plane and school. Mutiply that by the number of hours spend flying to get the license (FAA minimum is 40 hours, but national average is really 60-70 hrs. Few make it in only 40.) Add to that the instructor's fee, maybe $25-$35/hr, which you typically pay seperate from the plane.

Sound depressingly expensive? Spread it out over a year, or 10 months, and it's much easier!

  2. I soloed on my 16th b-day many years ago. You can obtain the student pilot certificate prior to your 16th b-day---it's  a combination medical and student pilot certificate. In short, it becomes valid for solo flight when endorsed by a flight instructor. In the U.S., age 17 is the minimum for a Private Pilot-Airplane certificate.  I did it at my hometown airport, at a Part 141 ("FAA approved") flight school. About 3 years later, I was an instructor there while also attending college. The cost was far less back then. ($16 an hour rental for a new PA-28, $8 an hour for a high-time instructor.) At that age, the first solo is a big deal. However, in the big scheme of things, it is not necessarily the biggest aviation accomplishment that you will experience. And there is much to learn in the years that follow. But it is a big deal on your 16th b-day. Good luck!

  3. Lots of money, time and effort. If you have the desire to pursue a dream ---it is important. Be prepared for the cost and good luck to you.

  4. A lot of time and money. You have to have so many hours with a flight instructor...then solo flights. Then you have to pass a test. Call a local flight school for more info. You don't have to be 16 to obtain a pilot's license.

  5. In the US:  $6000.  Local airports.  Two months.

  6. In the UK, students can train with an instructor from the moment they can reach the controls. The CAA states that pilots can only go solo from the age of 17. Any flight school would take you
