What does it take to have a successful relationship? Not just in love but in life period. ?

In any relationship, be it romantic, platonic, or business-oriented, communication is key.  If those involved in the relationship are not "on the same page," a communication breakdown ensues and the whole relationship deteriorates.  Take, for example, when you haven't spoken to a once-close friend in years; attempts to rekindle that friendship fail when you realize that this person is not the same he or she as before.  Or, as in the cutthroat business world, you want to forge strategic alliances so as to benefit your own long-term career ambitions and financial security.  Without a clear communication path with those above you, you inevitably find yourself conveniently passed over for promotions.

Respect and the ability to give and not take. However this isnt always the case, you get some people who in other words, Cant be negotiated with. They just want to make other people miserable and respect will not do, these people you should just leave be.
