I don't want to run my own but I want to know what it takes. I would like to better understand what breeders that have their own rattery have to do to start them up and maintain them.

  1. idk,... that seems hard though!

    good luck! ♥♥

  2. 1.  Pedigreed breeding stock to ensure good, healthy, nicely tempered animals, 2.  A good vet, 3.  High quality, airy and spacious cages, 4. Nursery tanks/cages, 5 A good scale, 6 Breeding cages, 7 high quality, balanced, preferably organic food, 8 Chlorine/fluoride free water source, 9 a variety of challenging, stimulating toys, 10 plenty of cash for unexpected problems that arise, 11 Homes lined up for the babies a few litters ahead of what has actually been delivered.  It is really a hobby, not a business, because even if adoption fees are collected, they don't cover all of the costs.  The only way to truly make money is to be a feeder breeder, and that is just not the way to go.

You also need quite a bit of time to figure out and study genetics, bloodlines, and trends in order to breed mostly to improve the animal, but to also to make sure people get lovely pets when you adopt out the ones you don't want to breed from.
