  2. that means that an undesirable sect of *anything* is almost eliminated.  I would say that about those little ants in my kitchen when they're almost all gone.  "that's the last of a dime breed."  It has roots in the phrase "a dime a dozen", so it means that something is plentiful but essentially worthless.  Ironically, you wouldn't say "last of a penny breed," as there is no such saying.

  3. I think you're mishearing the phrase "last of a dying breed," which means the last of a set of animal that has been disappearing for a long time.
