  1. I'm going to assume you are writing an assignment?

So for example if I had to write an assignment about "human cognition" a legitimate website would be the "American Psychological Association"; however a bad website would be "Tom's guide to Human Cognition".

Legitimate in this case implies that it has authority on the topic, usually it would be a website that is open to Peer Review.

Depending on what you are doing Wikipedia would not be recognised as a legitimate website (just be aware of that).

    Hope this helps.

  2. Appropriate for the purpose you're using it for.  For example, if you want to comment on a news story, go to the website of a newspaper and not to The Onion.

  3. Some websites are simply jokes.  For example, here is a company website - but the company is totally fictitious:

    www.stantonconsulting.us

  4. Legitimate = Trustworthy, legal etc. So, Trustworthy/Legal site basically.
