What does mini - mal mean in relation to surf boards?

i recently bought my first board and i heard this word thrown around alot, i asked my friend and he told me it was short for mini - malibu, but what does it determine in a board? size? weight? material?

  1. I mini-mal is generally used to describe a board that's not quite a longboard,  but definitely not a shortboard.  Normally, the term is used when a board is over 7'0 and under 9'0.  There's also an "egg" which hovers around the same sizes, but is noticeably rounder.  The "egg" is wider in the middle and narrows at the nose and tail.  The material and the weight don't play in to factor.
