  1. The story doesn't revolve around them.

A minor character is someone like..the mailman..or the bartender..

Someone with only a little part in your story..

  2. In a book, play or movie, there is always a main character or protagonist, a key figure who features prominently in the book, film or drama. The other actors or characters are the supporting cast, also referred to as minor characters.  In the movie, "Snow White", for example, she would be the main character, and the dwarves would be the minor characters.

  4. In any work of fiction, be it a book, play or movie, there are a few people who's story it really is.  But few groups of interest exist in isolation. They have servants, bosses or lovers who round out their lives but are not really part of the story.  The nurse in MacBeth, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in Hamlet for example. These are minor characters and would be included in the  "supporting actor" category at the Oscars, etc..
