Question:

What does moderate to large Ketones mean health wise?

I am on a very low carb diet eating only meats, fruit, and veggies could someone tell me what moderate to large ketones means in regards to my diet

  1. It means you are in "ketosis", which is what happens when you burn fat for energy. I attended a weight loss program once and our ketosis was screened; if we weren't in ketosis, they assumed we weren't following the diet and they gave us grief about it. I hated that program.

    But that's what it is. If you were eating a regular diet and were spilling ketones and/or suger, you would likely be diabetic. It's your diet, and it actually means you are sticking with it. Good job!


  2. Ketones mean that your body is burning fat for fuel. In a non-diabetic, some ketones are not harmful as there will be insulin in your body to prevent acidocis. However, I would say that it is unusual to see large urine ketones.

Well Im a type one diabetic and when your blood sugar level gets way too high (about or over 250) for a certain amount of time your body developes Ketones which stop the insulin from getting to your body which means nothing to eat carb wise just LOTS and LOTS of water to flush them out. Try not to excersize either, it will probably only make you sick from my experience. Just keep drinking water. Also, I use Ketone Strips to check the level of ketones in your system, you might want to invest in some. Hope this helps!

  4. Large amounts of ketones are not good.  This condition is usually found in Diabetics.  Although you may not be diabetic you could develop type 2 diabetes if you don't start eating meals with more carbohydrates.  

    Large amounts of Ketones is caused by the by the breakdown of fat, to give your body energy.  This happens when glucose isn't available to breakdown like it should be to be your body's main source of energy.  Glucose is found in your starchy foods, carbohydrates and fruits.

    When glucose isn't available the by product of fat metabolism are ketones.  Ketone build up will spill into your urine causing a condition called Ketoacidosis.  This is when blood becomes more acidic than your body tissue.  This condition if not taken care of can be life threatening.

    You need to see a dietitian if your trying to loose weight because diets likd Atkins (sp?) are not good for your health and can have long term health effects.

  7. You get it from not eating enough carbohydrates. When your body starts to burn fat in your cells instead of sugar. It is very unhealthy and because you have moderate to large you may want to get medical attention. You should start drinking nothing but water until you have none. You will start loosing a lot of weight however, your body will not be able to break down any of the food you are consuming. This really puts a strain on your kidneys because they are trying to flush them out so you will need to go to the bathroom a lot, and won't be able to control it if you don't do anything about them. Low carb diets are so unhealthy, you need carbohydrates for energy, you should instead try reducing your calorie intake, not just eating low carbs.
