  1. Anger.  Extreme anger because something has hurt them deeply in life and they have never healed from it.  Also if people dabble in the occult or desecrate something religious there are spiritual consequences as well.  Anger though is the problem, and they are probably only going to change through prayer and when they are desperate enough to change.  People that say things like this are empty inside.  We need to pity them more than anything.

  2. Maybe something horrible happened that hurt him and he blames God so he's angry. He could be suffering from psychosis. He could be exhibiting attention seeking behavior. Perhaps he's just trying to irritate others. I would pray for him and, if we were close, try and talk some sense to him. As for consequences, I don't believe it's my job to decide. If he's mentally ill I don't think God would hold it against him though.

  3. Some people don't see anything wrong with what you consider blasphemy. They see it as just as silly as harmless as you see someone talking about raping the Tooth Fairy.

PZ Myers managed to get his hands on a consecrated host (that Catholics believe is the literal body of God) and put a rusty nail through it. To him, he put a nail through a cracker. Obviously, Catholics see it very differently.

Now, your question could be asking one of two different things. One would be whether you think there must be wrong with someone who doesn't consider the same things sacred as you. Well, if so, then most of the world has something wrong with them. Whatever your religious views are, they're almost certainly in the minority. So there doesn't have to be anything wrong with someone for them to think the Bible is just a book a bunch of people think god wrote.

The other question is whether there has to be something wrong with someone who, knowing how other people will be affected by his words, goes on to say them even though they mean nothing to him. And to answer that, we really have to understand his motives.

It's hard to know what his motives were. But it sounds like, at a minimum, he got you thinking. So that's something.
