  1.   Neuropathy is nerve damage that results in pain or loss of sensation.  The other answerer is correct- usually found in diabetics. The reason for this is that diabetics can have sugar control problems.  High blood sugars cause vessels to harden and can also cause problems with the blood cells, making it difficult for blood to be delivered to the smaller vessels such as the capillaries.  This causes damage to the tissues and nerves.  As a result, many people have pain in the lower extremities or have numbness.   You may have seen a diabetic with a foot sore or ulceration and they may be completely unaware because they did not feel themselves get injured.  You may see a discoloration in the lower extremities as well due to the poor circulation of blood.  Sometimes they are scaly, swollen, and have purplish or brownish tint

  2. Neuropathy is a disorder of the peripheral nerves—the motor, sensory and autonomic nerves that connect the spinal cord to muscles, skin and internal organs.  It usually affects the hands and feet, causing weakness, numbness, tingling and pain.

Peripheral neuropathy’s course is variable; it can come and go, slowly progressing over many years, or it can become severe and debilitating.  However, if diagnosed early, it can often be controlled.
