  1. As many have said, a nom-de-plume is a pen-name, the name by which someone chooses to be known as the author of some piece. Others use the term pseudonym to mean the same thing, though pseudonym is rather an affected term. Some writers use several noms-de-plumes, depending on the market they are writing for. Some men, for example, use female names when writing women's fiction, and male names when the target audience is men or mixed.

Interestingly, although the expression is French, the French themselves do not use it, only the English. The French use the expression "nom de guerre" ("war-name") for this purpose.

A good rule of thumb for choosing which word or expression to use is to use the English form rather than the foreign word, other than when the foreign word or term is too well established.  In this case, therefore, "pen-name" is a better -- and more immediately understood -- term. It is also quite an attractive term, and does not sound as pretentious.

  2. Steve t is correct.

  3. It's "nom de plume." Literally it means "name of feather," a reference to the days when people wrote the goose quills as pens--therefore "pen name."

The term is a little affected these days. On the other hand, it is more genteel than the alternatives: alias, sobriquet, AKA, alternative name.

  4. French for 'name of pen', literally.  It is the name a person writes under, or could be taken in a wider sense for the alias they use in show-business, or their commonly-used nick-name.

  5. it is the name a writer uses instead of their real name

  6. This is a fictitious name used mainly by writers to protect their identity and privacy literally means name of the pen

  9. It means pen name. Actors used to say stage name and writers use that or pen name.

  10. A pen name, nom de plume, or literary double, is a pseudonym adopted by an author or their publishers to conceal their identity. A pen name may be used if a writer's real name is likely to be confused with the name of another writer or notable individual, or if their real name is deemed to be unsuitable. Authors who write in fiction and non-fiction, or in different genres, may use pen names to avoid confusing their readers, as in the case of mathematician Charles Dodgson, who wrote fantasy novels under the pen name Lewis Carroll. Some female authors use male pen names, particularly in the 19th century, when writing was a male-dominated profession. A pseudonym may also be used to hide the identity of the author, as in the case of exposé books about espionage or crime, or explicit erotic fiction.
