What does nontransferable mean on my vehicle registration document?

My car is registered in New york but I moved to illinois. I am still paying on the car. does that mean i cannot get the tags changed over to illinois?

  1. No, it means you can't sell (transfer) the vehicle to someone else.  (because there is a lien on it) It has nothing to do with switching "tags" to Illinois

    The vehicle has a title issued by another state and is being held by the leinholder. Any state you register the vehicle can only create a registration for you and not a title therefore preventing you from trying to sell the vehicle.
