  1. I needed to know the basic stances, blocks, punches, kicks, to demonstarte all the kata I'd learned, I also had to have a strength test and I had to do 50 push ups, 50 sit ups and 75 squats. And I'm a girl.

  2. Well for my yellow belt testing I had to know...

All of the punches & blocks, Kicks, Stances, 9 different one steps to any attack at random, 2 Kata, an interpretation of both, and Bunkai of one, all the hand forms, and the terminology for everything. I had to be able to implement the techniques (accurately) while sparring, and had to spar everybody for the testing. I also had to know a Bo form. It was also asked of me (but not required) to understand the basics of a few concepts. All in all not too difficult, but difficult enough to weed out some personality types. The reason I say not too difficult was because I had a really long time to learn these by heart, not the ole' three months deal.

  3. In most places... just show up for a few months. Yellow belt is usually the first belt and means very little in most schools.

  4. It depends on your style and your instructor.  I've had two yellow belts.

For my first one I needed to know 10 "one-point" sparring techniques and demonstrate a few kicks, punches, blocks, and stances.  Plus, we had to do 200 pushups.

For my second one, I needed to know four kicks, two stances, five blocks, straight punches, one simple kata, and two self-defense techniques.  However, my sensei in that style individualizes the belt requirements so some people need to know more or less.
