Plants give us medicine. Taxol, an anticancer drug was first isolated from the Pacific Yew, and is now synthsized in chem labs. Asprin was first isolated from the willow, or something like that.

Soybeans (Glycine max), give us all sorts of products beyond the table.

Coal, comes from long-dead peat bogs that have undergone compression, forcing most of the water out.
