What does playing in the first position mean?

What does playing in the first position mean when talking about playing a scale for guitar? Also, how do you know what is the second position, and so on? Could you show me what it means to play in the first position of C major? Thanks a bunch

The first position is the first octave on the fretboard, which is essentially the first 4 frets.

any other position is shifted towards the neck from that.
