  1. Potvan who's that?

I thought it was Denis Potvin (Deh-nee Peau-vingt if you need phonetic help, which it seems Rangers fans need desperately) Drags fans are notorious crybabies. I know a transplanted NYer in California who still b*****s about Jean Ratelle's broken ankle in a game played against the Seals back in 1970. Doesn't he realize that my flip-flops have nearly as (little) protection from pebbles than the skates of that time did from pucks !!

  2. potvin broke anders hedberg leg with a clean check and that pretty much was the end of hedberg's good playing days, so he is the worst enemy of the rangers faithful

  3. In 1979, the Rangers took a big chance and signed a few European players.  They took a lot of c**p for this, everyone said they weren't tough enough, etc. etc.

Denis Potvin hit one of those players, Ulf Nilsson, (someone said Hedberg, but that's wrong) and broke his ankle, ending his season.  The Rangers made it to the Cup finals that year, and everyone thought the drought (they had last won the cup in 1940) was over... and the Rangers lost.  Many fans believe that if Potvin did not break Nilsson's leg, the cup drought would have ended in 1979, but it continued (until 1994).

Nowadays, Potvin isn't playing, the Rangers' drought is over, but it's a rallying cry for the fans... I love it.  And I wasn't even alive in 1979.

EDIT:  Heh, Laying Low... It sounds nicer when I say it. :).  I don't think it's about potvin anymore... I'd say most younger Rangers fans don't even know who Potvin hit or why he 'sucks.'  But it's a rallying cry/chant now... so it's more of a tradition and less about any potvin-related feelings.

  4. Because 29 years later, Ranger fan still hold a grudge against him for hitting Ulf Nilsson with a clean check, and Nilsson suffered a broken ankle in the process. At the time, then Rangers coach Fred Shero also said it was a clean hit. Nevertheless, Ranger fans haven't been able to come up with something new since Potvin retired over 20 years ago.

  5. all that plus the fact that he brought 4 cups to the island, which probably pissed them off more, but u know a player is good when the other team has to chant "you suck"

  6. The tradition began when Potvin checked some guy on the Rangers in 1979 and broke his ankle. Rangers fans still won't shut up about it.
