Question

what does amniotic fluid smell like/feel like? Is it possible that I could have a hole in my sac or something? I'm almost 39 weeks and I have never had my water break on it's own before (three kids, and ALL were induced)

hi there, Amniotic fluid can have a sweet smell to it, although it can also be odorless. If you are noticing a fluid discharge and are concerned that you may be leaking amniotic fluid, you should contact your doctor or midwife. There is a simple paper strip test they can use to determine whether or not your water has broken. Let me know what happend! good luck!

The amniotic fluid doesn't have a smell....atleast...I didn't smell anything, my water broke full force.  Yes it is very possible that you could be leaking fluid, and would call your doctor right away.  I actually had called my doctor before and thought I was leaking, and it ended up being urine, but....you being so far along, it very well could be "IT!"  Good Luck!

It feels warm and a little gooey (I think I remember that).  It often smells like cleaning solution.  It can look clear to dark tinged depending on if the baby has had his first bm or not, which sometimes happens if the baby is over due or in distress.  Your water can leak or it can gush.  If you're worried it has happened, you can get an immediate appointment with your doctor and they can test the fluid in your v****a and tell you if it's amniotic just to be sure.  When you're this far along, women sometimes mistake urine for a leaking bag of water.  It is so easy for a little tinkle to sneak out because there is so much pressure down there - that if your panties are a little wet, it could be urine easily.  There is also so much more and different discharge at this time - not to mention sweat.  I went in to have it tested once - it was not amniotic fluid and my doctor suggested it may have been left over s***n from an interaction with my husband the night before (how embarrassing!!).  ;)
