It's definitely not an English word, so is it an abbreviation for something or just a way to distinguish it from Oakland in California?!

  1. Olwenc has the correct answer - you can disregard the answer from the Special Agent. It is very definitely an English name.

Akarana is the Maorified version of the name Auckland. Auckland is merely a person's name. If it had been appropriate at the time it could have ended up with a name like Rambo or Madonna.

  2. a lot of people say "aux" "auck" "akl" "ack" etc etc.. ^^

  3. Captain William Hobson decided upon the name Auckland, in honour of his patron and former commander, Lord Auckland (at that time, the viceroy of India). Many of the other place names in Auckland bear the influence of Hobson's patron. Lord Auckland's family name was Eden, and a great many parts of the city bear this name.

  4. Hi Constellation,

Auckland is the English translation for the Māori name "Tāmaki-makau-rau" or "Ākarana".

It has nothing to do with Oakland, CA.

  5. Auck...rymes with Dork...that's why some people call it Dorkland!!.

  6. It means nothing.  Hobson (the Governor General) named the new settlement in honour of George Eden, 1st Earl of Auckland.

    Enjoy.

  7. Named in the 1800's after Lord Auckland.  How arrogant to think we may have named it so as to not clash with Oakland, California?  Why on earth would we care?  Probably no one here had even heard of Oakland, California at that time anyway. Americans still think they're the be all and end all in the world don't they......

I just read where Rhys Darby of Flight of the Conchords had encountered loads of Americans asking how they got the crazy idea to invent the fictitious New Zealand country!!!!  They actually think it doesn't exist & as they've never heard an accent like that they think it's all made up!!  He was shocked at how insular America is.

Also consider that loads of place names exist in lots of countries where no one cares about name mix ups, like London, England, London, Ontario, Canada, etc......

  8. How can you confuse the two?

    They are said differently.

    :P

  9. Auckland named after Lord Auckland. best city in NZ - more tolerant of cultural differences (probably why that white power fanatic and disgrace to European nation - Michael Laws doesnt live there.)
