The matriarchs were:

Charles and Phoebe Tyler and their daughter, Anne

Joe Martin and Ruth living with his mother, Kate,

Joe's children, Jeff & Tara and Ruth's son Phillip.

Then there was Erica Kane and her mother Mona.

And of course Palmer Cortland and his daughter Nina.

When the show started it was basically about these characters and their children.
