I live in Chicago where there are only 2 seasons; Winter and construction... I always see signs next to streets that were just re-done that read "Wet Oil".

What do they mean?

  1. What they are telling you is that a coating (asphalt binder) has been put down on the road.  This is used to seal the roadway surface and repair minor cracks.  These signs are usually seen in conjunction with chip and seal projects which tend to have many loose rocks in the top coating that get compressed as the road is driven by motorists.  Unitl this happens though, the asphalt will be a rough surface that is more unstable than normal causing a less safe condition.  These signs are to warn you of the loose rock and the fact that the binder has been applied and is more likely to splash up on your car if you are going fast.

  2. means they are doing road work and they have sprayed oil on the road and want you to know to slow down its slick and really best if you drive another way so it do get on your car
