I did a web search and this came up.  Looks like it is a book.  Maybe there is another meaning for the term, but I do not know what it is.

If you read it, you'd know.  Joy Luck is how they referred to the club they'd formed during the Chinese Vietnamese war, when everyone was anything but joyful and lucky and usually living in poor, bombed-out home conditions.  These women pooled their resources to enjoy a very upscale potluck together every week with fine foods and games of mah-jong.  They obviously did not speak English, so the concept of happiness and luck came out as joy luck.  Luck is an important concept in Chinese culture.  Luck as opposed to hard work.
