I'm a fantasy golf virgin. I just re-checked my players for this week, and it's got this red "NE" next to some names. I can't seem to find the legend on the page, so what does that mean?

  1. Not Entered. i.e., they're not in the tournament.

That'll be for one of three reasons: 1) it's an invitational and they're not invited;  2) they have decided not to play or 3) they weren't high enough on the exemptions list to get in the field.

The PGA Tour uses an exemption system to determine who gets in to any particular tournament. The people at the Top get the first crack; if they decline, it goes to the next player in the next exemption class, and so on.

So, for example, here are the first few categories:

       1. Winner of PGA Championship or U.S. Open prior to 1970 or in the last 10 calendar years

       2. Winner of THE PLAYERS Championship in the last 10 calendar years: (Beginning in 1998, this is a five-year exemption.)

       3. Winners of the Masters Tournament in the last 10 calendar years:

       4. Winners of the British Open in the last 10 calendar years: (Beginning in 1998, this is a five-year exemption.)

       5. Winners of THE TOUR Championship, beginning in 2005 (a three-year exemption):

       6. Winners of World Golf Championships events, beginning in 2005 (a three-year exemption):

       7. The winner of the FedExCup in each of the last five calendar years.

       8. The leader in PGA TOUR official earnings in each of the last five calendar years:

       9. Winners of PGA TOUR co-sponsored or approved events (except team events) within the last two calendar years, or during the current year; winners receive an additional year of exemption for each additional win, up to five years:

The complete list of exemptions, and who is on each list is here:

In addition, each tournament has several "sponsors exemptions", which typically are used to bring in a marquee name who otherwise would not get invited (John Daly, Michelle Wie, etc).
