What does "NOT READY FOR PICKUP ON THE 1ST ATTEMPT" mean?

I'm awaiting a package from UPS, it requires a signature, I was waiting at home all day and nothing. They usually leave a slip on the door don't they? I didn't get any of these nor was there a truck near my house at any time. I check my tracking info and see "NOT READY FOR PICKUP ON THE 1ST ATTEMPT. A 2ND PICKUP ATTEMPT WILL BE MADE" does that mean they tried to deliver it?
