  1. the crank can be a double where it has two chainrings or a tripple where it has three.

  3. the triple refers to 3 rings on the front gear set.  the smallest called the granny gear.  some serious riders do not have it but i like having the triple for the granny gear especially on some of the hills i climb.  

  4. Triple usually refers to the crankset, the chainrings by the pedals. If there are three it's a triple. Triple cranks are less common on new bikes now since the advent of compact cranks.
