I've come across that term several times. There is a translation in the dictionary but "bigotry", "bigoted" and "bigot" seem to mean slightly different things and it gives me several words how to translate it that don't have very much in common with each other. So can someone give me an idea of its general meaning by describing a bit what it implies? Is it more like "religious", "fanatical" or "hypocritical"?

  1. bigote means "mustage" in spanish

  2. What the Oxford English Dictionary has is:

"obstinately convinced of the superiority or correctness of one's own opinions and prejudiced against those who hold different opinions"

So basically, "bigoted" describes a person who holds any kind of prejudice against other people and their opinions.  It can be in terms of anything, including, religion, race, political party, etc.

  3. BIGOTED:  adjective:  having strong opinions that most people think are unreasonable, especially about race, religion, or politics:

BIGOTRY:  noun:  bigoted behavior or beliefs; example:  "religious bigotry"

BIGOT:  noun:  someone who is bigoted  "He is such a bigot when it comes to religion."
