I've always wanted to know what the actuall meaning of "domo" meant. I've seen it being used as "thank you" some of the time but I've also seen it as a greeting; "Domo des" or something. And the little brown thing, domo-kun. Is there a meaning behind his [its] name to? Thanks in advance.

  1. domo is one of those words that carries alot of meaning.

    >  thank you

    >  sorry

    >  excuse  me

    just to name a few.

    It depends on the situation.

  2. It literally means "much". Hence domo arigato and domo sumimasen get shortened to just domo as a colloquial "thanks"/"excuse me", etc.

I'm guessing the NHK's domo-kun character is called that because he wants to thank people for watching NHK-or maybe say "please excuse our dull shows"-just kidding.

  3. It is the least formal way to thank or acknowledge someone else

  4. Domo is how you would say thank you to a close friend. Domo Arigato Gozaimasu is what you should say to family and elders.

  5. Domo.(sounds like domo for major-domo)

"Domo"is a very convenient word (expression),

and frequently used by native speakers. Thanks to the ambiguity of this word,(basically it is an adverb meaning "very")

this word can be used on various occasions.

    Such as....

When someone gives you a present, you can say "Domo", instead of saying "Thank you".

When you step on someone's foot on the train, you can say,"Domo" instead of saying,"I'm sorry."

When someone died, you can say to the bereaved family, "Domo" in a low voice, instead of saying, "My deepest condolenses."

When you visit someone, you can say "Domo", instead of saying, "Long time no see! How are you doing?"

This way, you can save your breath.
