  1. Democratic means “pertaining to democracy.” When a government is elected by the people, for the people, it is called as being “democratic.” In a democratic nation, there is social equality, liberty and dignity for each and every citizen or inhabitant. A country or person who advocates democracy is known to be “democratic.” The word democratic also means popular, because it implies a representative of people who stands to benefit on a large scale. Abraham Lincoln in his Gettysburg address summed up the essence of a democratic form of government when he said that it was a government “of the people, by the people, for the people.”

In a democratic form of government, the highest power of governance vests with people who exercise this authority either directly or indirectly by electing a representative or body of representative through periodical elections. The system of elections is also known as “voting.” The word democracy echoes with meanings like freedom of speech and expression, fair means of trial and justice and universal suffrage. The term democracy has a Greek origin, “demos kratos”(“demos” meaning people and “kratos” meaning rule), which simply meant “rule of the people.”
