I'm also interested in the origin of this idiom. I came across it in an article about business etiquette: 'You can end a long phone call without sounding rude: 1. Promise to finish the discussion at another time. 2. End on an "Up" note. 3....'

Google gave another example: "Wall St. ends week on an up note as oil prices cool"

Thanks

  1. Ending on an up note means that you finish,i.e. phone call, busniess meeting etc with a positive feeling

  2. To "end on an up note" means to end the conversation with something positive to counteract the (usually negative) flow of the conversation as a whole.  It applies about the same way to a period of time.
