Question:

What does "entry level" mean exactly?

I was wondering if this meant a job requires 0 years of experience (which I find hard to believe...) or if it's a range such as 0-2, 0-3, etc.

Thanks!

  1. little to no experience. 0-1 year i would say

  2. I think it depends on each individual employer. I do agree that it could mean the pay is very low. I have actually seen an ad where it said "ENTRY LEVEL AND WILL PAY AS SUCH!" I think that was a warning. But, I have also seen ads that claim to be entry-level and they want more things that are above entry. You really have to read the ad to try to get an idea.

I was always taught that entry-level met that you have zero or very little experience in that particular job/field or zero experience in general. But, it really does depend. There are job ads that will say entry in one line and then list 100 things they want. That is not entry-level, IMO. I guess it depends upon the job and the field.

I am looking at entry-level jobs in the law field, because I am starting school to become a paralegal. I had an interview for one job, they said it was entry-level, but when I got there, they said that it was more advanced, but no one would take a low salary. They actually said this to me. So, they were trying to get someone with experience for an entry-level wage and it was not happening.

If you see an ad and it just says entry-level and includes some skills or traits you have, apply! If it gives a range of experience and you are very close, apply. If you have most of what they want, apply, BUT be honest about your actual abilities. You have to judge each job by itself.

  3. It means you get your foot in the company door, and may have to start at the .bottom but can and usually do work your way up as you get better at the job. Experience is more 1-3 years or so depending on the job, or it could be much less if they are willing to train you.

  4. Usually less than two years experience.

(Although some companies have positions that they only open for New College Grads.)

  5. Many times it's just a nice way of saying your wage will be a minimum way.
