What does "got me of guard" mean?

someone said "got me off guard" on a pic on myspace. what does tht mean?

  3. I think they meant, "caught me off guard."

    It means that they were not expecting what was said, and that they probably couldn't come up with a quick response.

    A couple of places the saying might have originated from are:

    During a duel, the opponents say, "On guard" to indicate that the sword duel is about to start.  Should one person attack before the salute, they have been caught "off guard."  This would be similar to two boxers coming to the center of the ring to get instructions, and one boxer hitting the other before the match started.

    In the military, a sentry has a certain location to guard.  Should the soldier leave the location, he would be "caught off guard", which could result in him losing his life.

    Anyway, it might come from those events, and it might not.
