the phone is not hung up, the way it should be

the phone has been ringing all day.

Also if your mom ever says your off the hook   I would say this time you got away with what you did but do not do it again.

We used to say telephones were "off the hook" when they were not rested on the cradle.

That depends, if someone says, "this party is off the hook" it means it is cool, but if you are like in trouble or something and your mom or someone says, " I guess your off the hook" it means like your not in trouble any more - or you got away with it

It means something is tight, off da chain, awesome.  You really pronounce it as, off da hook!

It all depends on how you use it... For example, "Man, that party was OFF THE HOOK!" that means "man, that party was awesome!!"... Or if it is used like " Even though she knew I was guilty, she let me off the hook", its translated into: "Even though she knew I was guilty, she let me get away with it."
