What does "on steps" mean?

I found it in Exodus 20:26: "And do not go up to my altar on steps, lest your nakedness be exposed on it."

  1. staircase  or steps  handicap accessible,  of course G-d would not allow  someone handicapped  on ramp


  2. I think in the Old Testament the term "steps" was the ancient word for what we would today call "stilts" (which are like steps in the sense they make you taller than normal).

    Back in the days of Exodus, common people did not wear trousers or underware, so any man or woman going up to the altar on stilts would be exposing themselves to the congregation.

    Not a bad rule at the time.
