Question:

What does "own root" mean on some of the tags on trees?

I work at a greenhouse and often wonder what the phrase "own root' on the information tags on the trees meant.

Please explain!

  3. Some have been grafted to another tree...........have you ever seen an apple tree with different kinds of apples...........it's had a branch from another tree grafted to it.  That's one way. Red apples on one side yellow on the other........First time I saw this, I thought the wine the night before might be getting me:) all the best

  4. Grafting is used when you want vigorous growth, most roses are grafted onto another rose for their root stock. Also fruit trees.

  5. Own root means it's growing on its own, original roots.  

    Grafted mean that the part you like, or see, has been cut off of its own roots and put onto the roots of a hardier tree so that it can tolerate colder temps. or adverse conditions.  You can often tell where the graft is on the trunk because there is a large ring of growth on the lower part of the trunk, normally just over the roots.
