  1. My roommate freshman year of college was from Pakistan and he said that it meant "land of the pure."  Now given how many countries have that ending of -stan, I'm betting that it means "land" or "land of the."  That's just a reasoned guess though, I cannot promise that it's true.


  2. The suffix, originally Farsi (Persian), "stan" does mean land, but more literally: place of.

    Afghanistan - Land (place) of the Afghans

    Pakistan - Land (place) of the pure.
