  1. This is not a dumb question, proven by the fact that no one else has given you the most basic, technical answer. TECHNICALLY, "studying dance" is simply pursuing a full-fledged dance curriculum that is designed to produce a technically proficient dance practitioner upon the completion of the program. Since all curriculums are not alike, that is not the same as saying that all dancers come out of the various programs with the same training. Some have the skills to be professional performers, others have skills to be teachers, and others have skills to work in other dance-related occupations.

Here are two examples of full-fledged dance curriculums: one from the Boston Ballet School, where academics are not part of the program, and one from the University of the Arts, which is a BFA college program that includes academics:

In contrast to "studying" dance, many other students in dance classes merely "take" dance, or "do" dance, as evidenced by the fact that they only take classes a few times a week or less or are not being taught by master or certified teachers.

  2. well what would study mean for like for a test?  It's practicing, learning, etc.  I guess maybe in some places studying dance would mean like opening a dance history book and reading it, but that is very... uncommon.

  3. studying dance pretty much means learning everything there is about dance and performing. in a college you would do a major in dance. there you would do dance classes in contemporary and ballet, you would have classes like at school on dance history, you would learn to choreograph dances...  things like that. its like a subject that you'd at school... like you would study PE in a way. hope that helps. happy dancing =)

  4. studying dance history, styles of dancing, dancing lessons, etc.

I would assume a dance major, like a music major, needs to learn history and theory of their chosen medium of performance. I started college as a music ed major, but the theory killed me.
