  3. I think it's just a greeting. On the videogame Oblivion, like half the NPCs say that to your character, casually, like they're saying "Hey, what's up?" or something.

  4. Yes it's just a hale and hearty greeting used by those of us who still speak English.

It's a very old greeting... used a lot in Shakespeare and that sort of thing e.g. "well met by moonlight"

Something like "Hail fine fellow....well met" ... would only be used in a jocular fashion now, no-one uses it any more.

Has NOTHING to do with education etc.

  5. capable, equal to a challenge

This is an old expression dating back to the 16th century. The descriptive phrase “well-met,”  had (and still has) connotations of suitability and propriety. It’s based on a different meaning of “meet,” an adjectival/adverbial usage indicating something is literally or figuratively the right size for a given situation.

    Example:

In swordsmanship he is well met for any foe.

Both parties are well met for a successful marriage.

":Hail fellow well met" has a different meaning entirely.

In the 1500s, we start to see “Hail, fellow!” turn into “hail-fellow,” a term for a close friend—that is, one with whom you would exchange this type of very friendly greeting.

Then “well-met” gets tacked onto the phrase. “Well met!” was another greeting of the time. It is generally taken to mean, literally, “Good to meet you!”
