What does "why" mean?

I think I understand what "what" and "how" mean, but "why" doesn't make any sense to me.

  1. Why asks for the reason behind something. Like, in the question, "Why are there so many kids in my school?" it asks for the reason behind the number of children in the school.

    "Why" is a word that is basically to ask for a reason.......for example, if someone was acting bad to you and you don't know the reason of that, you would say "why did you act bad to me?"

  8. "Why" means "the reason". It's redundant to say "the reason why", because "the reason" means the same thing as "why"....But you will hear many people (even educated people) say "The reason why".  I don't know the reason people talk this way. I don't know why....
