What does redneck sport mean to you?

I am from the South and I am very proud that I am. I keep hearing people say Nascar started in the South and that is why people think it is redneck. I know some very classy folks from the South and a lot of races are run in the North. How do you define redneck and when did Nascar become associated with it?

  1. Im from the south to and like you said there are some very classy people from down here. And to me a redneck is someone who lives out in the sticks and doesn't live like regular city people. And NASCAR has been associated with rednecks since either the beginning or some time around the time it started to become popular.

  2. When a troll asks a question about redneck it means they are simply insulting the entire fan base with a stereotype.

Being from the south (as I am) it's the simple life. Small cities, country living, boating at the river, hunting, fishing. (And let's not forget tailgate parties on county roads)

But then again you don't have to be from the south to enjoy those things. In fact the record bass (fish size) is held in California I do believe. http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/fishi...

So there are a lot of people that likes the same thing no matter where they are from including NASCAR.

  3. When I think of this "Redneck Sport" I think of a good time with good people... If it is redneck, I guess I am redneck.

  4. It's because of the diehard earnhardt fans with the #3 shaved on there chest, back and prolly some other places i don't want to know!

but to be honest i really don't know why it's called a redneck sport....

  5. When I think redneck, I think Noodling (the catching of catfish by having them bite onto your fist).  I'm from Oklahoma, and let me tell you that there are a ton of redneck people here.  I define redneck as country person meets trailer park person meets hillbilly.

I don't really associate redneck w/ nascar, but I guess people do because most redneck people like nascar...  But I don't think that makes it a redneck sport.

  6. Redneck means that they, literally, have a redneck. It's red & sunburned from working outside all day. It signifies hard, dedicated workers whom won't give up until the job is done or it kills them. Which ever comes first.

I'm from Tennessee, born & raised, & yes we do throw the term around alot here in the sticks but we do know the true meaning of the word. Unlike all others who don't understand the word & love to use the term to stereotype us southerns into a group.

Northerns call southerns rednecks & Southerns call northerns yankees. It's a never ending cycle that will continue until the end of time.

And NASCAR is associated with the term redneck because it started in the south. And because many ignorant people don't understand what NASCAR is truly about.

  7. To me, Jeff Foxworthy's Redneck Games come to mind... instead of the discus throw, they'll be throwing Ford hubcaps... they had to cancel water polo after the horses drowned... etc.

NASCAR isn't redneck... truck pullin' is redneck (and it's fun to watch, too!)

  8. Don't mean diddly  .  I am from and live in, New York and I am a die hard NASCAR fan and all of my close friends are as well and have been for years. Most of the guys had their daddy drag them to races since they were little boys.   We live close to a famous dirt track and are there often when there are no NASCAR races on and in between too.  So NASCAR don't mean Redneck to me.  If it did, I wouldn't care...I'd love that new yawkers can be considered right up there with the best of them!!

  9. I'm a Northerner.. from Cincinnati, actually. We really do love NASCAR up here. I really hope (and so do a lot of other Cincinnatians) that Kentucky Speedway (which isn't too far from the Nati) can get a Sprint Cup race. That would be... AMAZING!!

  10. It depends on which dictionary you use.  One definition of the word "redneck" is a person who is poor, white and southern.  I have no problem with that.

  11. redneck sport means that only white trash watch the sport, that is blatantly false because I have been a fan my whole life as has my family were from Michigan where definitively not rednecks I recently spent a few weeks in Alabama it was great the people in the south are very friendly im starting to question the people that live up here so just ignore it because the people that say that are less educated then the rednecks they talk about.

  12. I don't define NASCAR as redneck.. However, Monster Trucks are a whole different thing.

  13. To me the sport is called redneck sport because of Dale Earnhardt and Jr fans

  14. For starters, "Rednecks" like me were round long before Dale Jr. The association with NASCAR comes from NASCAR's roots, moonshining. Those good ole boys running breakneck down old country roads running illegal booze, most often still made gut rot. And the flag has been flying high ever since, back when they were running the beaches in Daytona. And true, not everyone from the south is Redneck, but would probably be a better place if they were.

  15. DONT PAY'EM NO MIND

  16. Well, NASCAR did start in the south at Daytona Beach, but I don't consider Florida really the "south". But until the '70's or so, most races were run in the south. Northern people call Southern people rednecks- like the back of your neck gets red when you're running the tractor. It's not meant to be a nice term. Like hillbilly, only meaner.

Ignorant Northerners call Southerners rednecks, and NASCAR a redneck sport. They don't realize that all kinds of people from everywhere race in it and are fans of it. That's just their stupidity showing- don't pay it any attention.

Be proud to be a rebel cuz the South's gonna do it again! = Charlie Daniels

  17. guts and glory

also they got REDneck from the flag color, red. Ya red stands for redneck, white means white trash DUH

  18. I bet I'd like the south.

I liked Atlanta, except the 104% humidity. We don't get alot of that in Utah, so it was a little hard to breathe.

I don't percieve nascar fans as rednecks.

Although, at the Vegas race this year, there was a motor home in the infield, it had 2 lay-z-boy swivel recliners on top of it, so that the people could just spin around in their chairs to watch the race, on top of their motorhome,I confessed I was envious and that we might have to do that one day, allegedly according to various family members this officially made me a redneck. They also had a bar table, and two bar stools on it, it was sooo cool!!

Sorry, got off track there, I'm not from the south, I apparently have redneck in me, so it's not just a regional thing. And I don't really think it's primarily a nascar thing.
